Road Milling Picks Manufacturer — Replacement Picks to Your Machine Spec
We manufacture road milling picks and matching holder blocks to your fleet specification — 42CrMo pick bodies, vacuum-brazed tungsten carbide tips, hardened and tempered. Our Australian road-maintenance customer started with a 500-piece trial order and now buys 80,000 picks a year from us.
Road milling picks (also called asphalt milling teeth or planer picks) are the cutting consumables on cold planers and milling machines. They wear out constantly, which makes them a high-volume, repeat-order part — and exactly the kind of part where a reliable China supplier changes your cost per tonne of milled surface.
Pick Construction: What You’re Actually Buying
A road milling pick is three components working together:
- Pick body (shank) — forged in 42CrMo alloy steel, CNC-machined to the shank standard, then quenched and tempered for impact toughness.
- Carbide tip — a tungsten carbide insert vacuum-brazed onto the body, ground to the tip geometry your machine needs.
- Retaining sleeve / wear ring — so the pick rotates in use and wears evenly rather than flat-spotting.
We can also supply the pick holders, blocks and sleeves as a matched set, so one purchase covers the whole wearing assembly.
Materials & Heat Treatment
| Component | Material | Typical specification |
|---|---|---|
| Pick body | 42CrMo (AISI 4140) forged | Hardened to HRC 38–42, tempered for impact resistance |
| Carbide tip | Tungsten carbide (WC-Co) | Hardness HRA 86–89, vacuum-brazed to prevent tip loss |
| Optional wear coating | Wear overlay / carbide studding | Extended life in abrasive or high-impact conditions |
Machine Systems We Match
Picks are not universal — the shank diameter, tip diameter and holder profile must match your machine’s drum system. We produce replacement picks compatible with the major systems, including:
| System | Common shank sizes |
|---|---|
| Wirtgen (W / W100 / W200 series) | 20 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm |
| Kennametal / Sandvik / BETEK-style | 22 mm, 25 mm |
| Other OEM aftermarket | Per your drawing or sample |
How to Specify a Road Milling Pick
Send us any four of these and we can confirm the right pick and quote it:
- Machine make & model (e.g. Wirtgen W200)
- Shank diameter (20 / 22 / 25 mm)
- Carbide tip diameter and reach
- Annual consumption or order quantity
Working conditions matter too — asphalt, concrete, or mixed — because they drive the carbide grade and body hardness we recommend.
Lead Time, MOQ & Trial Orders
- Trial order: from 500 pieces — this is how our Australian customer started, and their order was shipped in 12 days.
- Sample lead time: 7–10 天 from drawing confirmation.
- Production lead time: 15–25 天 depending on quantity and carbide grade.
- MOQ: 500 pcs, confirmed per part in the quote.
Inspection & Documents
- Weld integrity and tip-brazing inspection (anti-tip-loss control)
- Hardness check on body (HRC) and carbide (HRA)
- Dimensional inspection of shank and tip geometry
- Material certificate and inspection report on request
FAQ
Are your picks compatible with my milling machine?
If you tell us the machine model and shank size, we match the system and send a sample before mass production. We’ve supplied picks matched to a contractor’s full machine fleet in Australia.
What’s the minimum order?
Trials start from 500 pieces, and we encourage a small order first to prove wear life and fit before scaling.
Can I get holders and sleeves in the same order?
Yes — see our pick holders, blocks & sleeves page. Buying the matched set saves freight and guarantees fit.
Send your machine model and shank size for a spec sheet and quote.
