Mining & Trencher Picks — Conical Picks for Coal, Rock & Trenching
Conical mining and trencher picks in forged 42CrMo bodies with vacuum-brazed tungsten carbide tips. U47, U92, U95, U135 and U170 styles, matched to your shearer, roadheader or trencher.
Mining and trenching picks (also called cutter picks, conical bits or point-attack picks) cut coal seams, rock strata and trenched ground under far harsher conditions than road milling. The failure mode you care about most is tip loss — a pick that loses its carbide tip stops cutting and damages the holder. Our process is built around preventing exactly that.
Why Tip Loss Happens, and How We Prevent It
- Vacuum brazing of the carbide tip to the body — eliminates the high-temperature desoldering that weakens conventional brazes.
- Forged 42CrMo body, quenched and tempered to HRC 38–42, so the body absorbs impact without chipping.
- Optional wear overlay on the pick nose for gangue and hard-rock faces, extending life 50–150% in mixed strata.
Common Styles & Models
| Style | Typical application |
|---|---|
| U47 / U92 / U95 | Coal shearers — standard and reinforced picks |
| U135 / U170 | Roadheaders and continuous miners — hard rock picks |
| Trencher picks | Trenching machines for utility and pipeline work |
| Non-spark picks | High-gas mines where impact sparks are prohibited |
Pick Classification by Working Condition
- Standard picks — pure soft coal, lowest cost.
- Reinforced picks — alloy overlay, for gangue-bearing coal.
- Hard-rock picks — thickened tip and body, for sandstone and shale.

FAQ
Can you match the picks I already use?
Yes. Send a photo, drawing or sample, and we identify the style (U-series or custom) and quote a direct replacement.
Do you do reinforced or hard-rock picks?
Yes — we supply standard, reinforced and hard-rock grades, and recommend the grade based on your strata conditions.
Can I order holders and sleeves too?
Yes — see our pick holders, blocks & sleeves page for a matched set.
Send your model or sample for a spec sheet, wear-life comparison and quote.
